Chris Smiet is a Postdoctoral researcher at the Theory department of the Princeton Plasma Physics Laboratory. He acquired his MSc in experimental physics in at Leiden University with a research internship at Cambridge University. His PhD was on self-organizing knotted structures in plasma.
The main outcome of his thesis work was the identification of a novel MHD equilibrium which occurs through the turbulent reconnection of helical (linked) magnetic fields in high-beta plasma. At PPPL he will investigate the said self-organized structure using more refined plasma models. He is also interested in topological properties of the magnetic field during sawtooth oscillations and novel device geometries such as the knotatron device.
